| ASA Orphanage is a home to 21 children from all different ages as well as the extremely friendly and hardworking staff and their families.
Many of the children have been brought to the orphanage as their parents have no money to care for them or have died and there is nobody left to look after the child. Even if there is somebody to take care of the child, in a country like Madagascar there is no help from the state for the remaining family members in accommodating this child and only few will have the income to do so. Often the only ones left to support the child are the grandparents who are too old to take proper care of a young child forcing them to send them to an orphanage.

At the orphanage AOM has built a water pump so that they have sufficient water for drinking and cooking and we have also supplied funds to build the floor and ceiling in the main hallway on the second floor. Some of the older students have received English lessons at the AOM volunteer house by a volunteer and this will hopefully help them in their search for a job. There is much work left to do. We hope to finish the floors and ceilings on the second floor, build a railing for the balcony, build stairs on the outside of the building and supply them with a sufficient amount of beds and mattresses (at the moment they are only 3 beds so that many have to squash into one bed and the rest of the children sleep on the floor- even without a mattress). ASA has four handicapped children that we hope to supply with the needed medication and provide one of them with a wheelchair. In the future we would also like to help them with dental requirements. However, all of these goals can only be achieved with your help. |

| THE VOLUNTEER HOUSE | |
The volunteer program is a great comfort to the orphans of Tangaina. With AOM providing housing, volunteers come to Madagascar at their own expense to teach English and help out at the orphanage. The extra attention and English speaking skills gained combine to make this the most popular program with the children. They literally come running to the house for their lessons.
Through volunteers we were also able to identify and fill other areas of need from dental work, to a septic system, to hiring tutors (many of the children are behind in their school work), to getting kids out the door and on their way to school. |
|
A volunteer exposes the children to English, hope, a can-do spirit and friendship while enriching our volunteers’ lives. Every extra person loving these kids helps them grow into emotionally healthy adults. With 40 growing children there is never enough adult attention, especially for those having suffered the loss of family. |
